dc.description.abstract | The purpose of this study is to investigate the association between social media and people’s perception of crime. Previous literature regarding media influences on public perception of crime has focused primarily on traditional types of media; there is less research that investigates newer types of media, such as social media, and its impact on public perception of crime. Using an online survey, this study investigates the association between consumption of true crime narratives on social media and its impact on users’ attitudes and beliefs about crime. Social media consumption has a statistically significant positive relationship with perceived likelihood of victimization and fear of victimization. As social media usage continues to evolve, it is necessary to conduct further research to investigate how receiving information through these platforms can influence people’s perception and fear of crime. | |
