This study examined the effectiveness of course-based and non-course-based writing remediation at Southwest Texas State University, a public postsecondary institution in San Marcos, Texas. Subjects were divided into a course-based group and a non-course-based group. Dependent variables included students passing TASP (Texas Academic Skills Program) writing after remediation, grades received in writing intensive courses taken after remediation, hours passed at the University, and cumulative grade point averages (GPAs). No statistically significant differences were detected in any of the tests except for the test on GP As, which possibly was due to limitations of the study. The study discusses several implications for future research and practice and provides a model for such a study.
