Research on barriers to attendance and strategies for retention are reviewed. An overview of the current use of intake procedures to identify and address barriers to attendance is provided through the survey method of 374 Literacy, Even Start Family Literacy, ABE, and GED programs in Texas. It was found that respondents may not use the intake process to counter barriers to attendance as effectively as they could, and some current practices revealed in this study seem to be contributing to institutional barriers to attendance.
