Southwest Texas State University, San Marcos, Texas.https://hdl.handle.net/10877/18325The purpose of this study was to identify if chief's dietetic service and their supervisors had the same perceptions of role requirements for the position of chief; and to determine if the hospital size and the level of education achieved by the supervisor would effect the chief's role requirements. Surveys were mailed to chiefs, dietetic service and their supervisors at 161 Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Centers. Respondents were asked to answer demographic information regarding education achieved and/or desired of the chief; medical center size; and sex and years in position of respondent. Participants were asked to rate 55 managerial roles as to the degree of importance those roles had in regards to the position of chief, dietetic service. A two-tailed t-test indicated a significant difference at the Q.01 level for 20 roles and ten roles at Q.001. Individual grouping of activities into Mintzberg's ten managerial roles indicated a significant difference in five roles at the Q.01 and no difference at Q.001. With the exception of disturbance handler, no significant difference was found between the size of the medical center and the role requirements of the chief. Likewise, there was no significance difference noted in the educational level or the years in the position of the supervisor and role requirements for the chief, dietetic service.
