Abstract

Challenging elitism in the arts, and using whatever privilege we possess to do so, is necessary in order to make theatre more accessible for all people. Tickets for Fefu and Her Friends will be sold by donation. All income will go to Hays-Caldwell Women’s Center. Community outreach is a huge aspect of this project in hopes that the show will reach a wider, less traditional audience that may not otherwise be exposed to theatre. In directing Fefu and Her Friends by Maria Irene Fornes, I will remain as true as possible to the vision Fornes had of the play when it was first written in 1977. Fefu and Her Friends is politically ahead of its time, challenging our view of women’s relationship with the world. It is also forward-looking in its structure, as it calls for being promenade style performance with four distinct audience groups viewing scenes in differing sequence. Performance art is extraordinarily valuable to humanity, and people have been performing and consuming performances for longer than we have records. Fefu and Her Friends by Maria Irene Fornes is a necessary performance piece. It educates non-feminists that feminism is still necessary. It educates white feminists by giving importance to the struggles are of women of color. It inspires burnt out intersectional feminists to continue fighting.
