Abstract

Sustainable initiatives can be achieved when the core aspects of the environment, economy, and social equity are equally developed. Studies have shown that one of the most attainable ways to succeed in sustainable development is to integrate sustainability programs in higher education institutions (HEIs). The following literature review highlights how HEIs are able to foster a generation of sustainable professionals through interdisciplinary action. Using a combination of former research and current projects, I aim to highlight the role of educational outreach in HEIs’ progress of educating students on sustainability. Researchers have identified that students resonate with interactive opportunities, and my analysis of workshops, events, and content produced by Texas State University’s (TXST) Office of Sustainability (OoS) has supported this conclusion. More specifically, students resonate with material that reinforces the relationship between individual impacts and the concept of sustainable development. The goal of this research is to gain a better understanding of the impacts that educational outreach in HEIs has on the implementation and utilization of sustainability initiatives. This visual compilation of work and research offers guidance to those that are in pursuit of education content and outreach material for HEIs.
