Abstract
This chapter presents an introduction to Information Visualization from Information Science and technological perspectives: semi-structured information systems and unstructured information systems are explored and 20th Century information Visualization programmers and theoreticians overviewed. The historical development of computer visualization along with information visualization early research communities are discussed in terms of significance for further developments. Directions and the promise of information visualization with regards to content and data are speculated upon for the future.
