Abstract

Interviews conducted among individuals who used alternative medicine in San Antonio, Texas, 1996 showed they were dissatisfied with Western medicine or wanted an option to biomedical treatments. Family and friends exerted the greatest influence on the types of alternative medicine respondents would use. Transcribed reports showed the strength of personal convictions in the effectiveness of alternative therapies. Respondents also valued the interactive time spent with their practitioners. This study suggests that both the frequency of visits and the duration of time respondents spent with their practitioners resulted in positive interactive relationships between patients and practitioners.
