| dc.description.abstract | A play’s historical context as well its production location has a profound effect on its story. Demeter and Persephone is a Southern Gothic adaptation of the ancient Greek Myth of the goddess of agriculture and her daughter inspired by San Marcos’ natural elements and cultural landscape. Through exploring the complex relationship of a mother and daughter, their interaction with Hades, the Greek god of the underworld, and all three characters’ interaction with the nature around them, Demeter and Persephone highlights the simultaneous fragility and strength of female relationships under patriarchy as well as the interdependent relationship between humans and the natural world. In the spring of 2023, I staged a production of this original play at important landmarks in San Marcos, including in front of Spring Lake at The Meadows Center, and near the San Marcos River at Rio Vista Park. I advertised this production not only at Texas State but at local businesses around San Marcos, hoping to create an event that anyone a part of the San Marcos community could enjoy. | |
