L.; Rogers, J. L.This narrative purports to be a true chronicle of events that composed a life which left its print stamped indelibly upon the history of the State of Texas, the life of William Gordon Cooke, a citizen of the United States, a citizen of the Republic of Texas, and finally once more a citizen of the United States.
No single life is better illustrative of those enterprising nondescripts who walked boldly forward and took possession of a territory that was far more valuable than any of their fondest dreams. William G. Cooke was one of those people who, when conditions became a bit stuffy in the East, took the popular advice: "Go West, young man."
Col. Cooke's career was short as it was brilliant. Having died at the age of thirty-nine while engaged in the duties of Texas' highest military office, he rested in a lonely and forgotten grave near Seguin, Texas, until sought out and discovered by Mrs. Max Weinert of Seguin in the spring of 1936, when he was reinterred with military honors at Austin along with other Texas soldiers and statesmen.

The writer, having lived in San Marcos a greater portion of his life and being associated with some of the ex-students and teachers of Coronal Institute, selected the subject because of personal interests. Also, since Coronal is only a memorial at present, this paper has been written in an attempt to help keep the memory of the school alive.Item Item The Heights of the Public School Pupils of San Marcos, Texas, Compared with those of the Burgess National Scale(1940-08) Jowers, Milton; Votaw, D. F.; Grusendorf, A. A.; Roady, J. M.; Rogers, J. L.It is the purpose of this study to compare the age-height distribution of San Marcos children to an accepted study of the age-height distribution for the children of the nation. To make such a comparative study between these heights and the heights for the child population of the United States it was necessary to find a suitable criteria. Although numerous studies dealing with the heights of children of all ages have been made, few of those may be used to determine the height of a child in comparison with the general average of children of that same age.Item Chinese Life in San Antonio(1941-06) Nims, Amy Elizabeth; Arnold, M. L.; Wiley, E. O.If teachers generally are to believe, as does Courtis, that "the basic element in democracy is faith in the power of human personalities to improve themselves if given the chance," they must strive to understand the nature of the personality and character of the individuals who make up society; they must discover the factors which enter into the development of personality and the formation of attitudes and character; and they must explore the materials available and appropriate for use in accomplishing the growth of the individuals.
